Part of an ongoing series of studies on the Cold War discourse in the Chilean press, the articles studies a corpus of 57 editorials and op-ed pieces from Chile’s main conservative newspaper in the years 1957-1962. The texts analyzed fall into three categories regarding their semantic-discoursive components: (1) texts in which the descriptive evaluative component is predominant; (2) texts in which the ethical-didactic component is predominant;(3) texts dominated by the prescriptive-exhortatory component. The analysis of modality focuses on two main modes: (1) axiological, emphasizing value judgments; (2) deontic, emphasizing desirable actions and attitudes. The analysis also illustrates how the semantic components as well as the modality are supported by metaphors and nominal and adjectival groups
