The article analyze the writings of Víctor Caro as a result of his travels through the Atacama Plateau in the context of the demarcation of the chilean-argentinian border. Caro's memoirs and correspondence are historical documents that allow us to appreciate how the sensibility of the traveler entangled with the engineer's rationality, constructing a negative vision of the territory, at the time that it needed to be incorporated to the national sovereignty
