The study deals with Eusebio Lillo (1826-1910), e signifi cant representative of Chilean Romantcism, who authored the National Anthem. After a brief contrast between the European and Chilean Romanticisms, especially of their different political frameworks, the article takes into consideration several moments of Lillo’s production, commenting on one particular poem, “The Junco and the Violet” (the “junco” is a botanical relative of the daffodil). Against the background of his fi nal years, in full solitude, even misanthropy, the poet makes the fl owers of his youth a symbol of his destin on the earth.
